Whether you already use some symbols in your note-taking or need some guidance to get started, this course has you covered. After briefly reviewing concepts like verticality and shifting, YOU will take your note-taking technique to the next level! We will dive deeply into the use of symbols in consecutive interpreting. This workshop will focus on symbols for concepts and ideas related to terminology commonly used in community, medical and legal settings, drilling them with a variety of engaging exercises until they become second nature to you. You will also receive guidance on how to develop your own symbols.

Throughout the entire session, we will practice with scripts and role plays based on real-life scenarios.

Class Schedule: October 1, 2022 (Saturday)

Timetable: 12:00-5:00 p.m. ET (9:00 a.m.-2:00p.m. PT) with a break from 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET (11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. PT)

  • Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI): 4 CE hours

  • International Medical Interpreters Association: 0.4 IMIA/NBCMI CEUs 

  • American Translators Association: 4 ATA CEPs

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Employ strategies to drill symbols until their use becomes second nature.
  2. Use symbols for concepts that arise frequently in interpreting encounters.
  3. Follow guidelines to create new symbols.

 

Target Audience: Community, medical and legal interpreters with 40 hours or more of interpreter training. This course will benefit those who wish to incorporate symbols into their note-taking technique and improve their consecutive interpreting skills. The focus is on symbols for terminology that commonly arises in community, medical and legal interpreting encounters.

 

Material and Technical Requirements:

  • Tablet or notepad to take notes
  • Voice recorder for self-recording (a smartphone is fine)
  • Flashcards or post-it notes
  • Desktop or laptop computer (recommend i5 processor or above) with webcam (The course may not be taken on a tablet, phone or other small device.)
  • Zoom (Updated Version)
  • Chrome or Firefox (Updated Version)
  • Quality headset with boom mounted microphone 
  • High speed internet (minimum 5 mbps upload/10 download) 
  • Ethernet cable (Must connect computer directly to router. Minimum quality CAT6)*
  • Ethernet to USB adapter (if needed)*
  • External Monitor*

*Recommended but not required

Attendance Policy for Live Online Training Programs

In order to receive a course completion certificate, participants in our live online programs must submit all applicable documentation; complete all coursework requirements; be visible on their webcam for the entire program; and complete the applicable attendance requirement:

  • For live online programs shorter than 10 hours, participants must attend all live scheduled hours.

  • For live online programs 10 hours or longer, participants may miss no more than 10% of the total live scheduled hours. (For example, attendance of 18 hours is required for a 20-hour program; attendance of 36 hours is required for a 40-hour program.)

Disruptive Behavior Policy
